The World Health Organization and the economic crisis

On 11/03/2020 The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 as the world pandemic. The day later, 12/03/2020 Minister of Health prof. Łukasz Szumowski declared the epidemic state of emergency in Poland.

Beyond obvious threat to human health and life, the COVID-19 strikes also at the global economy. Many sectors are experiencing economic recession and a global economic crisis in such a situation seems to inevitable. In a summary report released because of the Coronavirus, OECD reduced by 0.5 percent the anticipated economic growth in the world from the forecast of 2.9 percent.

What does it mean for the logistics sector?

It is really hard to predict the development of the situation that has so many variables. The logistics sector is currently in chaos. The Asia-Pacific area is the largest part of the logistics sector and represents about 45% of total world income. The drop in orders from China left its mark on the economy of the European Union. What is more, closing borders by more countries cause flow of international goods much more difficult and it puts drivers in danger. Despite this, international transport of goods seems, for now, unthreatened. However, many entrepreneurs feel uncertainty. Polish carriers are already recording a significant decline in orders from Italy and more and more investments are being limited because of slowdown market. The information chaos only enhances instability in these unusual circumstances and it leads to a crisis.

The greatest threats to the international carriage of goods can be divided into two groups:

  • Increasing restrictions on borders hampering the free movement of goods
  • Total stagnation of transport caused by forced quarantine of the enterprise

ROUTE4U hopes that the global situation will significantly improve soon and also announces that due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 taking into account the well-being, health and life of our employees, customers, loved ones and broadly understood public health, we decided to take action to limit direct contacts and introduce remote working.

At the same time, we strive to provide correct information up to date to interested parties. However, keeping in minds the extraordinary circumstances, which we all have to face, we will be extremely grateful for your understanding in the case of temporary difficulties in communications – for which we apologize in advance.
